Montjean-sur-Loire

Beautiful weather today for our 25-mile amble up the Loire.

The kids found a little time to read and explore while we adults searched for food, made decisions, and tried to keep the crew moving forward.

It is fun to see how bike-friendly this part of the world is. Campgrounds have special sites designated for “velo tourists,” along with picnic tables and refrigerators. This last detail means that we can indulge in fresh milk, yogurt, cheese, and veggies without having to eat them all immediately.
Dave and kids went to the campground pool when we arrived this afternoon, and I set off on a walk into town. There is a gleaming church atop a nearby hill, and that was my goal. Here is my rendition:

Here is the real deal:

After poking around the hilltop and its 1860s cathedral, I found the grocery store and returned home. It was fun to take a solo walk.
Supper was pesto, tomato/basil/mozzarella salad, and bread with avocado.

I even splurged and bought rice crispies for Ruby. She ate two bowls before bed.
Tomorrow we head to Angers for two nights. It’s about 25 miles upstream. This sounds so tame (or lame?) after meeting a Canadian dad and his 9-year-old son who rode 70 miles today, their first day. The kid is on his own bike. What?!

  2. Hahahaha, wow!!! That 9-year-old kid--what did he look like? Was he smiling? That's incredible. So cool. I like your style better though. What a beautiful painting you did! How nice that you found time for a solo walk. I think it's funny that Rice Crispies are the expensive treat, not the dazzling pastries you've been eating each morning. Wow, your supper looks gorgeous. Thanks for the great update. Sounds like you're having fun.

  3. Wow, Dear! Velo-friendly campgrounds, solo walks, delicious food, sunshine and puffy clouds... this is what bike touring is all about. Hope your weather holds and you enjoy that ride up the river as much as we did all those years ago. Thanks for the great report! And for the excellent painting!

  4. I'm so happy that you found a chance to do a watercolor and take a solo walk! I love your painting. I'm so bad at drawing complicated architecture, and you did it beautifully! And came home with dinner in your hands.
    Whoa---70 miles the first day?
Sounds like it was a blissful day for all 4 of you. Did the fellows find new swimming trousers?
