Doctor Peach Saves the Day

I am happy to report that this morning we finally procured some effective drops for Ruby’s eye infection. We are already seeing massive improvement and a happier kid.
About 5 km from our campground, we rolled into a small town hoping for a bakery. In addition to a supply of fresh bread and chocolate milk, we found a pharmacy. The pharmacist took one look at Ruby and recommended a doctor (half a block down on the left). Away we went to Dr. Peach’s office (okay, really Piezche or something). The receptionist didn’t speak English, so out came Dr. Peach himself, a jovial, friendly chap who surveyed Ruby and our French eye drops and said, “I can get you something better.” Five minutes and 10.75 Euros later (I guess that was the price of the consultation), we were out the door to the pharmacy, where we got the drops. The whole transaction took less than 20 minutes and has improved our lives so much. Hurray!

Twenty-three miles today with a fierce headwind but high spirits. The first campground we tried was — again — a weird permanent settlement of caravans where people pay by the month, presumably so they can spend summer weekends near the Rhine. No place for folks like us.  We did run into a tandem couple doing Rome to Rotterdam in only three weeks!

So we proceeded to a second campground not far from the first. There we found the German family we cycled with yesterday. Their ten-year-old, who pedals her own bike (very impressive!), is our buddy now. Fun to have folks to chat with in the campground.
We are in Campingplatz Blaue Adria just south of Ludwigshafen. Tomorrow Worms and Thursday Mainz.

  2. Hooray for Dr. Peach!!!!!!! So happy to hear about the happier girl and the high sprits. And running into the German family again. Do German campgrounds still have showers that you have to put coins in to get 2 minutes of water? Lyle, we got your postcard today. Thank you!! You had been to 6 countries then....how many is it now? We discovered that the chicken cat has FOUR kittens. The wild black cat is the dad.
