Ferries and flat lands
Today began with a ferry from the campground, and several ferries later, ended at another quarry-side campground after 6 humid riding hours. First ferry was the cutest -
While the temperature was about 20 degrees cooler today, it was humid, and still pretty hard work to cover the 34 miles we had planned. The riding is nice and flat, and the network of bike paths takes us through many wonderful back lanes and off through fields in ways we never would consider without trusting the Dutch system -
We have almost finished the north end of our trip, and tomorrow we start to head west in earnest. We are only a few miles south of the Rhine at this point, and the series of estuaries that make up this land is starting to become evident. We still continue to have great interactions with the people we meet, but tonight we may be the only velo tourists in the campground. We always seem to elicit stares, but even more so tonight.
It looks like we are right on schedule for the rest of the trip, with space for leisure and enough time to allow us to get to our plane. It will be sad to let this lifestyle go, but it will also be nice to be back home.

All sounds good. East will be fun. And temps look moderate for a while. Carry on!
ReplyDeleteDid you get to clang the bell to call the little blue and white ferry over? Looks like fun. Not the humidity, though. Glad to know about the great people you're meeting, but it's kinda nice to have the campground to yourselves, too! You guys sure have a lot of stuff.
ReplyDeleteTry not to think too much about coming home yet. Keep practicing your Dutch!
We did clang the bell even though the ferry was already on its way. He could see us on the dock. So cute, and only for bicycles and pedestrians! Too small to turn the tandems around on the boat.
DeleteWonderful update, thank you, Dave! Love the braided mane on that beautiful horse. Sorry about the icky, enervating humidity. How cool that Holland has those amazing bike paths. Have fun heading west--hope the Germans turn up!
