Karaoke nightmare
Last night was our worst night yet in a campground, hands down. The karaoke blared until 11:40 pm — drunken, off-tune renditions of French pop songs sung so loudly we could barely talk to each other in our tent. We played hearts, read James Harriot, and cringed at the singing until nearly 11 pm because there was no point trying to sleep.
(Isn’t that the coolest Strasbourg sculpture?!)
The ride this morning was just 15 miles — a welcome break for our creaky bodies and tired brains.
Strasbourg is beautiful and bustling. We cycled right to the cathedral and then paused to research hotels.

Tomorrow temperatures should be ten degrees cooler. We hope Ruby’s miserable condition of red, itchy eyes and stuffed up nose will be improved by a good night’s sleep. And maybe, just maybe, we’ll even feel ready to brave a French campground again...
Around 10:50 Dave went to talk to the DJ, who promised they would quit in 15 minutes. 25 minutes later, off I went to confront the man again. I told him I had a sick daughter who needed to sleep. He repeated this information into the microphone to the crowd, and they booed me loudly and rudely. I had no choice but to turn and walk away.

So tonight, we are tucked into beds in two air conditioned, quiet hotel rooms. Ahhhh. This is the life. The bikes are stowed in a hotel storage room.

After a long afternoon rest (naps, books, baths), we had fun exploring the old part of town on foot.

Beautiful! The two hotel rooms will pay huge dividends! Good for you guys. And some sleep will most likely cure Ruby's issue, too. Nice that you're enjoying Strasbourg. And thanks again for keeping us current about your travels. Love the sculpture!
ReplyDeleteRude, loud drunks!! Did you make your request in French? I'm so glad you found some comforts. Thinking about spending two nights in this comfy hotel?
ReplyDeleteYes, in French. A quick glance at google translate to remind myself of words like “malaide” and I was fully armed for a rant.
DeleteI mean malade.. I think. Sheesh!
DeleteMan. Well, this is a story to rival the one where Kirk went searching for "un un kilo de poisson pour ma femme malade." What a horrible DJ. I want to beat him up. Hope your night in that beautiful city restores your minds and bodies (and eyes), and you wake up feeling excited for what tomorrow holds. Tashi and I are going over to Lola's to watch the World Cup final tomorrow morning. Should I cheer for the Netherlands?? Love to you all. How is Dave's leg?
ReplyDeleteFun that you’re going to watch the World Cup with those guys! The leg is fine. Have a fun Sunday!
DeleteOne nice version of In-a-Gadda-da-Vida by Dave would take care of that karaoke party. Glad you had a short ride and a quiet hotel!
ReplyDeleteOh god. We had fun thinking of you, LA, and how we could have just taken over that party!
DeleteOmg, those French campgrounds are the worst for actually getting any sleep. We had so many experiences like this but I was never brave enough to ask people to turn down their music. Sounds like it wouldn't have helped anyways!
