Ponies, Kittens, Emus, Chickens, Goats, Pigs, etc.
That was the longest title yet. But we actually did see all of the above, and more!

One day recently we were going by some emus, and Lyle said, “Don’t emus look intelligent?” Mommy was just thinking at the time that emus looked like they had pea brains So now we call emus “intelligent pea brains.”

We took three ferries and one bridge today. The third ferry was unexpected. It was also the tiniest. The other two ferries and the bridge were normal sized.
The tiny ferry barely fit our bikes. Lyle and I had to go across first in the ferry by ourselves. I didn’t notice much because I was reading the whole time.
Mommy and Daddy came on the next ferry trip with the tandems.
Mommy was hungry this afternoon so we stopped at a market. After we went to the market and got all of our groceries, we went across the street to eat. When we reached the other side there was a big petting zoo (except you couldn’t pet the animals). There were emus, roosters, chickens, ducks, geese, pigs, goats, etc.
When we got to our campground it turned out there were two adorable ponies that looked like they needed to be scrubbed and brushed. We asked the owner, who was very nice, and he gave us a black bucket full of brushing tools: combs, curry brushes, finishing brushes, etc. When we combed and brushed them we got lumps of hair that were the size of my hand, including my long fingernail, and yet it looked like there was no change! It was very unsatisfying. Right when you thought you had a good spot, you would notice there was a ton more hair on the pony’s body. In the middle of that, one of the ponies lay down, which was very odd.
Then Daddy came over and said the barn was full of kittens. At the time, I thought he was talking about two or three kittens, and barely in the kitten stage. But when we went into the barn, we saw about 17 kittens, ranging in age from 7 to 13 weeks. They were all mewing and yowling when we came in, but they quieted down when we cuddled them.— Ruby
Thank you, Ruby! It's wonderful to see your day through your eyes. Wow, lots of animal fun. And some terrific pictures! I'm glad the kittens calmed down when you cuddled them. I hope ours will get like that. Those ponies must have been happy to be rid of some of their hair. It is a hot summer, after all!
ReplyDeleteWow, Ruby! You have become an excellent story teller! Your day sounds like so much fun... with the ferries and the many animals and the barn filled with kittens. Such a rich life you guys are leading! Have you learned some Dutch? And have you had a tour of one of the working windmills along your route? Fascinating to see how the wind drives the gears to grind the grains. Thanks for the nice description of your day!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a great day, straight out of a Margaret Wise Brown book. "Kittens by the Barnfull with an Occasional Intelligent Pea Brain" by Ruby Wild has a nice ring to it. I loved that the ponies just relaxed and enjoyed themselves. All the animals will be talking about you two sweet kids for weeks.
ReplyDelete17 kittens??? I hope you tucked at least a few of them into your pannier?
ReplyDeleteHahaha, actually I would have loved toexcept this morning we found out they all had fleas!
