Whew!

We were at the epicenter of Europe’s heat wave yesterday — and the hottest day on record for this region — and we’ve come out the other side. Temperatures peaked at 109 degrees. Our hotel rooms were toasty. Cold showers and fans and the knowledge that it was almost over got us through.
The town of Venlo was fun despite the heat. There was a sprinkler going in the square near our hotel, and we stood in it every time we passed by. We ate the world’s best falafel at the Hungry Hippo, run by a very chatty young Syrian/Armenian guy. People were enjoying the day in restaurants and cafes despite oven-like temperatures. When the Greek restaurant finally opened, it was unbearably hot inside where the meat was browning. We wondered how the glistening employees still managed to smile. We got a couple of Greek salads to go and retreated to our hotel rooms. Still hot, but cooler than the restaurant.
We got up and going this morning (more cold showers) and on the road by 8:45.

The kids stayed busy hunting Dutch bicycle route signs, and we found many-a pony and donkey willing to eat yesterday’s rubbery carrots.

Twenty miles by 11:45 and we were off the bikes. This campground has shade, a river, and a wading pool that is deep enough to lie down in. Perfect.

The wind has picked up and changed direction and the forecast is for exciting quantities of rain. Maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow — we’re ready.

We will start tomorrow’s journey on the little ferry that is within view from our campsite. There is a big bell on each side of the river, and a single clang brings the ferry man zooming across. He spends his day motoring back and forth in his little blue and yellow boat picking up cyclists — and presumably, a small car or two. If nobody needs a ride, he just hangs out.

Three weeks until we’re on the plane to Iceland. Can’t believe it! We hope everybody at home is enjoying a wonderful summer.

  1. You guys are incredible! How beautiful that you were able to bike and play in that amazing heat! And now the rains are coming... and you'll manage that too! Remember all of us picking up our belongings out of the lake in Yugoslavia? That was rain too! Hope you manage a good night, and that tomorrow's biking is fun and not too wet. Enjoy!

  2. Bully for you guys! You have made lemonade from lemons! I love your description of the cheerful, glistening restauranteurs, Liv. And the spraying water. And the ferryman. You found a lovely-looking bike path and campground. Shade and water, and not crowded. Maybe even quiet? So many squat and tubby horses!
