Headed South

A day of breezy riding took us from Bruges almost to Dunkirk and France.  Somehow we were able to spend most of the day headed straight into the wind, although we rode several different directions. Luckily it relented for the last few miles once we were inland, because I was pretty tuckered out.  We did make good time, though, so there was enough space for a nap before supper to make everything alright.  Some nice Dutch velotourists are camping with us, and they kindly spent some time with me this evening discussing a wide range of topics from architecture to the culture of fear that is in some places currently.  Fun people, and I am glad to have met them.

We did pass 1600 miles-

And had a simple lunch alongside a busy beach in Oostende-

We have been enjoying our complete lack of comprehension of Dutch signage for weeks now, and I finally got the camera out today to document one of our favorites-

You can see the way the fiend has scared all the cyclists into a corner and is probably demanding some payment in order to let them pass.
It is scheduled to be a wet day tomorrow, so we are well prepared for a push to a hotel near the ferry, and then Saturday we will head across the English Channel for the final legs of our journey.  Mixed feelings abound.

  1. Love the wildrooster! and terrified cyclists. Don't love the headwinds. Your mileage is getting impressive! Enjoy your last day on the Continent, and a rainy sendoff. Very familiar with those mixed feelings.

  2. Your picture of the beach says it all! Are those apartments? Thanks again for saving enough energy to share your day with us. And good luck with that leg tomorrow to the hotel and ultimately to the ferry. Careful with the wild roosters!
